One passenger has died and several dozen were injured during severe turbulence on a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300ER, diverted to Bangkok.
The deceased passenger is a 73-year-old British man who had pre-existing heart conditions. Authorities believe he suffered a heart attack during the turbulence, but further investigation is needed to confirm this.
Among the injured passengers, seven are in critical condition, and 23 have minor injuries, primarily head injuries. According to one passenger, the plane suddenly dropped sharply shortly after the seatbelt sign had been illuminated.
Code 7700
Flight SQ321 departed from London Heathrow on Monday evening and landed in Bangkok around 10:30 AM local time. Shortly before landing, the pilots reportedly issued a code 7700 emergency signal, according to British and Thai media.
Emergency services responded swiftly upon landing. There were a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board.
Condolences
Singapore Airlines has expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased passenger. The airline stated that its priority is now to assist the affected travelers as best as possible and is sending a special team to Thailand to provide support.
A convoy of ambulances transported the injured to the hospital.
