More to come from Al Jazeera Sport
The focus now shifts to Group F, as Turkey faces Portugal in Dortmund on Saturday. We will be bringing you the live coverage of that match, which kicks off at 6pm local time (16:00 GMT).
What’s next for France and Netherlands?
France will face Poland in their final group game on Tuesday in Dortmund, while the Netherlands will play Austria on the same day in Berlin. Both teams will be looking to book their tickets to the round of 16.
Kante named Player of the Match
Tournament record snapped
The result in Leipzig has ended a run of 50 Euro matches without a goalless draw, stretching back to England facing Scotland at the 2020 edition.
How does Group D look?
The Netherlands are top of Group D with four points, while France are second. Both sides have a good chance of qualifying for the round of 16. Austria is third with three points from two games, having beaten Poland 3-1 earlier on Friday. Poland becomes the first team to be knocked out of the tournament.
Van Dijk and Co pull off defensive masterclass
The Dutch defense was tested heavily by France’s talented attackers, but at no point did the Netherlands' backline look shaky. Van Dijk led by example, while their keeper Verbruggen was also impressive. Youngster Simons would be disappointed to have his thunder strike ruled out.
No Mbappe, no party for France
France, playing without their injured star forward Mbappe, struggled in front of the goal. The 2018 world champions had a whopping 16 attempts at goal but failed to find the net against a robust Dutch defense. Captain Griezmann missed two big chances.
Full time: Netherlands 0-0 France
The most anticipated game of Group D ends in a goalless draw – the first of the tournament. The Netherlands had a goal by Simons controversially ruled out for offside while France had only themselves to blame for not finishing off their numerous chances.
Sloppy France
France will be frustrated with their finishing. How have they not managed to find the net from their 16 chances?
Terrific defending from Weghorst
Substitute Weghorst pulls off a brilliant tackle to stop Kante from taking a shot at the edge of the box. He is, once again, living up to his billing as a super sub!
Five minutes added
Will France finally finish off these moves? They have had 15 attempts at goal so far.
Chance for France!
Rabiot instantly recovers from his knock and wins the ball in midfield. He makes his way towards the box and squares the ball across the face of the goal, but Thuram can’t reach there in time to slot it home!
Rabiot takes a knock
Rabiot is down after a rough challenge from Dumfries. The Frenchman is receiving some medical treatment. Earlier, the Dutch defenders cleared away a ball played by Giroud to Griezmann inside the box.
No Mbappe today?
It looks unlikely that we will get to see Mbappe in action in this game, even though France could do with some firepower in their attack.
Giroud can’t connect
Tchouameni sends a crisp cross into the box for Giroud, who tries a backheel flick towards goal but can’t quite connect. Not a bad effort from Tchouameni, who is playing this game as a replacement for the injured Mbappe.
Set-piece chance for Netherlands
Taking a free kick 25 meters (27 yards) away from the goal, Depay deftly puts the ball in the air for Van Dijk at the far post. The Dutch skipper jumps for a header, but the ball is cleared. That was also the last of Depay from this game as he is replaced by Weghorst, who scored the winning goal against Poland.
France make changes
Dembele and Thuram are taken off, as Coman and Giroud come on. Still no Mbappe for the 2018 world champions.
Triple change for Netherlands
Frimpong, Schouten, and Simons are off. Geertruida, Veerman, and Wijnaldum are on.
VAR says no goal!
After a lengthy VAR check, the referee signals the disallowed goal stays. Simons, who hammered a shot from the edge of the box, was not offside, but it seemed like Dumfries was blocking the keeper in an offside position when the shot came in.
Netherlands put the ball in the net! But VAR takes a look…
Just when the Netherlands thought they had scored against the run of play through a strike from Simons, the linesman rules it offside! We will have a VAR check.
It’s all France right now!
Dembele cuts inside and hammers a left-footed shot, which just goes over the bar! France are all over the Dutch defense now. A goal is brewing!
Big miss from Griezmann!
Griezmann misses another sitter! France pulls off a brilliant team move as Kante steers the ball through several bodies to put Griezmann through on goal at far post. But he fails to beat the keeper from a few yards out, as he snatches at the shot and it’s easily saved by Verbruggen.
France come close again!
Tchouameni rises highest and heads a corner kick towards the goal. The header just flies over the net! Yet another good effort from the French side.
Thuram comes close!
Rabiot finds Thuram at the edge of the box with a clever pass. Thuram shuffles the ball to his right and unleashes a low shot towards the bottom left corner, but it flies just wide. Decent effort from Thuram!
Rabiot misses
Dembele whips a cross into the box for Rabiot, who struggles to keep the ball down and ends up sending it into the stands. Ouch, poor effort that.
Poor effort from Depay
An onrushing Simons is brought down by Dembele, and the Netherlands have a free kick from a vital position, 25 meters (27 yards) out from the goal. Depay, donning his famous headband, steps up for the set piece, but his kick fails to clear the French wall.
Kante shoots wide
Kante breaks forward for France from the right side and takes a shot from the edge of the box that, to his disappointment, sails over the bar.
Robust defending from the Netherlands
Dembele’s cross from the right wing is blocked away by van Dijk before Kounde’s shot is also kept out by a Dutch defender.
Dembele gets France under way
Dembele competes with Ake as he sprints up the right wing, but his touch on the ball is a bit too heavy, and it goes out of play.
Second half begins
All to play for in the second half! No changes for either team yet. Mbappe was chatting with the officials in the tunnel and had a bib in his hands, but he is not being brought on just yet.

Half-time: Netherlands 0-0 France
No goals in the first half, but it’s been an exciting affair in Leipzig. The Netherlands have had five attempts at goal while France has had six. Griezmann and Co have had more of the ball, but he was guilty of missing two attempts in less than 60 seconds. Can he find the net in the second half? Let’s wait and watch!
End of first half
France pass the ball around among their defenders before Kante charges forward. But the time is up, and the referee blows the half-time whistle!
One minute added
Are we going to see a goal before the half-time whistle?
Fans target Griezmann
The Dutch fans are throwing drinks at Griezmann as he tries to take a corner, which is cleared.
Free kick for France again!
The referee finds van Dijk guilty of a foul on Dembele and awards France a free kick on the right side, just 23 meters (25 yards) from the goal. Griezmann thumps it into the Dutch wall, where one of the defenders heads it away. Poor effort from Griezmann!
Free kick for France
De Vrij puts in a nasty challenge on the onrushing Thuram, giving the French a free kick from a good position, just 30 meters (33 yards) from goal. Griezmann flicks the ball into the box for his forwards, but van Dijk clears it with a header.
Chance for the Netherlands!
Griezmann loses the ball, allowing Frimpong to charge towards goal, but the Dutch winger’s shot is blocked by Saliba.
Live wire Simons
