F1 Canadian GP: Russell Secures Pole in Thrilling Tie with Verstappen

George Russell secured his second Formula 1 pole position during the Canadian Grand Prix qualifying, tying championship leader Max Verstappen with an identical time.

Russell set his best lap of Q3 in the initial runs, clocking a 1m12.000s to establish a benchmark. Initially, Lewis Hamilton joined him in the top two. However, fresh tires in the session's final moments seemed poised to shift the standings. Verstappen matched Russell's lap time exactly but was relegated to second place due to the order in which their laps were set.

It feels so good, so much hard work has gone on back at the factory. We said in Monaco we hoped this was the start of the season," Russell commented. It's awesome when we come to Montreal. First bit done, but now we've got to fight for that win."

Russell added, "Since we brought some upgrades to Monaco we've really been in that fight so we're going for it tomorrow."

Lando Norris took third place, just 0.021s behind Russell and Verstappen, while Daniel Ricciardo responded to criticism by placing his RB in fifth, ahead of Fernando Alonso. Hamilton, unable to improve on his final lap, will start seventh, alongside RB's Yuki Tsunoda. Lance Stroll and Alex Albon completed the top 10 with impressive qualifying performances.

Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were surprise eliminations in Q2, struggling with the Montreal circuit's demands. Sainz reported a lack of grip, and Leclerc aborted his final lap.

Logan Sargeant qualified 13th, narrowly missing out on Q3 by 0.008s. Kevin Magnussen and Pierre Gasly were also eliminated in Q2.

Sergio Perez was knocked out in Q1 for the second consecutive race. Despite improvements, he fell back into the bottom five, just days after securing a new two-year deal with Red Bull. Valtteri Bottas, Esteban Ocon, Nico Hulkenberg, and Zhou Guanyu were also eliminated in Q1.
