Unlike the leader of the Green Party, the leader of the New Democratic Party describes himself as more alarmed" after reading a confidential report accusing parliamentarians of knowingly aiding foreign actors. This afternoon in Ottawa, Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), made a dramatic media appearance to share his conclusions after reviewing the classified report from the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Intelligence (PCNSI).
This report, of which a redacted copy had been made public, alleges that certain MPs began knowingly assisting foreign state actors shortly after their election, including transmitting confidential information to them.
Mr. Singh accused, without naming them, parliamentarians of treason and claimed he himself had been targeted by foreign interference. However, he did not specify whether these parliamentarians are currently serving or not.
He also criticized Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for inaction in response to allegations of foreign interference, despite being informed.
Additionally, Mr. Singh criticized Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre for refusing to obtain the necessary security clearance to access secret documents, accusing him of disregarding serious allegations concerning his party. He stated, "I am more alarmed today after reading the report. What is clear to me is that Justin Trudeau was aware and did not act, and Pierre Poilievre does not even want to be informed about serious allegations concerning his party. To me, this disqualifies him as a leader."
Earlier on Tuesday, Ms. May reiterated multiple times that there is no list in the report identifying sitting MPs who knowingly collaborated with a foreign state.
However, she raised the case of a former parliamentarian, unnamed in the report, who allegedly knowingly transmitted privileged information to a foreign agent. "This individual was fully aware of his actions [...] and should be subject to a thorough investigation and prosecution," Ms. May stated during her press conference.
In contrast, Mr. Singh referred to multiple parliamentarians implicated in the report.
