‘Real Martha’ Sues Netflix Over ‘Baby Reindeer’ – The Backstory of the $170 Million Lawsuit

Scottish Woman Sues Netflix Over 'Baby Reindeer,' Seeking $170 Million in Damages

Fiona Harvey, a Scottish woman who claims the character Martha in Netflix’s series *Baby Reindeer* is based on her, has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, demanding at least $170 million in damages.

Despite Netflix and Richard Gadd's assurances that they altered key details about Martha for the show, their efforts to conceal her identity have seemingly failed. Here’s the backstory of how the situation escalated to this critical point.

In April, Netflix released the limited series *Baby Reindeer*. Richard Gadd stars as a fictionalized version of himself, named Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian and bartender who is being stalked by a woman named Martha. Their interaction began after Donny offered the lonely woman a free cup of tea at the bar where he worked.

The show is based on Gadd’s real-life experience with a stalker in his 20s. Gadd claimed that the woman sent him 41,071 emails, 350 hours of voicemails, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook messages, and 106 pages of letters. She also sent bizarre gifts, including a reindeer toy, sleeping pills, a woolly hat, and boxer shorts.

Allegedly, she also stalked Gadd outside his home, workplace, and comedy gigs, harassing his loved ones, including his parents and a trans woman he started dating.

The True Story Behind *Baby Reindeer

In an interview with The Times, Gadd shared his ordeal: “At first everyone at the pub thought it was funny that I had an admirer. Then she started to invade my life, following me, turning up at my gigs, waiting outside my house, sending thousands of voicemails and emails.”

Despite the changes made to the character, Harvey's identity was not sufficiently concealed, leading to her lawsuit against Netflix.
