Jack Black has announced the cancellation of the remaining Tenacious D world tour dates following an outcry over a comment made by his bandmate, Kyle Gass, about an assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
During a concert in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday, Gass was asked to make a wish after being presented with a cake for his 64th birthday. He appeared to respond: Don’t miss Trump next time.
In a statement on Instagram, Black expressed that he was blindsided by the comment and stated, I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. He further explained that he didn't feel it was appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour and mentioned that the rest of the group’s creative plans are on hold.
Black thanked the fans for their support and understanding amid the controversy, which had already caused the postponement of Tuesday's gig in Newcastle, New South Wales.
Gass also issued an apology on Instagram, acknowledging that his remark was a severe lack of judgement. He wrote, The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous, and a terrible mistake. I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement. I profoundly apologise to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused.
