---This page is now closed. Thanks for joining us. These were the updates as Portugal beat Slovenia on penalties in the last 16 of Euro 2024 on Monday, July 1
Goodbye for now
That’s it for our live coverage of Portugal vs Slovenia at Euro 2024.
Roberto Martinez’s men made hard work of booking a spot in the last eight, but they join France, Germany, Spain, England, and Switzerland in the quarterfinals.
Just two spots remain, and we’ll find out who fills them tomorrow as Romania takes on the Netherlands and Austria faces Turkey.
For now, from me, Adam Hancock, it’s goodbye.
A Return to the Quarterfinals
Friday’s last-eight match will be Portugal’s first appearance in the Euro quarterfinals since 2016.
They beat France in the final that year and will now be looking to inflict more misery on Les Bleus.
--- France Next Up for Portugal
After a dramatic evening in Frankfurt, Portugal will need to gather their thoughts and refocus on a huge quarterfinal tie in Hamburg.
World Cup runners-up France await them in the last eight, after securing a 1-0 win over Belgium earlier today.
The pair last met in Euro 2020, drawing 2-2 in a group game in Hungary.
The quarterfinal will kick off at 9 pm local time on Friday – that’s 19:00 GMT.
Redemption for Ronaldo
It’s hard to look past the story of Cristiano Ronaldo this evening.
His search for a goal continues, but he was the center of attention for most of the night.
The Portugal captain attempted numerous free kicks throughout the game, but the big talking point came late on.
First, he stepped up to take a penalty in extra time. It seemed the fairytale was written, but Jan Oblak had other ideas, with the Slovenia captain saving the spot kick.
Ronaldo was left in tears at the change of ends. But he composed himself and returned in the shootout, stepping up to take the first penalty.
This time he made no mistake. What a night!
Slovenia Bow Out
Plenty of focus will be on Ronaldo and Diego Costa after this match, but there needs to be a lot of credit for Slovenia.
This was uncharted territory for them, and they more than held their own.
They didn’t just sit back and frustrate Portugal; they created a number of opportunities, including a huge chance for Sesko towards the end of extra time.
Their performance in the shootout perhaps points to a lack of knockout stage experience, but it shouldn’t deflect from a terrific tournament for them.
Penalty Perfection for Portugal
Three successful spot-kicks for Ronaldo, Fernandes, and Bernardo Silva.
But more incredibly, a hat-trick of saves from Diego Costa.
Slovenia fluffed their lines with some terrible penalties, but full credit to the Portugal keeper.
There’s plenty of emotion from the Portugal players, including Pepe and Ronaldo. What a dramatic evening in Frankfurt.
How easy was that?!
Bernardo Silva slams his penalty home, and Portugal are in the quarterfinals. Diego Costa is the hero!
