The sports world is still abuzz over the Yankees fans who attempted to grab Mookie Betts’ glove during Game 4 of the World Series, and there’s a surprising twist—one of those fans has an unlikely connection to former NFL star Rob Gronkowski.
In an appearance on Up & Adams with Kay Adams on Wednesday, Gronkowski revealed that he recognized one of the fans involved as his college friend from their days at the University of Arizona. Gronkowski, who spent three years as a Wildcat before entering the 2010 NFL Draft, shared that his friend, the fan seen reaching for Betts' glove in a gray jersey, was Austin Capobianco.
Fun fact, Gronkowski said while watching the clip, that guy, grabbing Mookie Betts' glove, was my friend in college. He confirmed the connection on social media, identifying Capobianco, who, along with John Peter, was ejected from Yankee Stadium and subsequently banned from Game 5.
Gronkowski reminisced that Capobianco was a member of Arizona's club hockey team, describing the group as maniacs and Capobianco as a devoted sports fan. He is all in for his teams. He is all in for the Yankees, Gronkowski said, recalling that his friend often talked passionately about the team.
Rather than condemning Capobianco’s actions, the former Pro Bowl tight end praised his friend’s enthusiasm, saying, He is a beauty. I just want to say congratulations for shining when your moment came, to the surprise of host Kay Adams.
