"49ers Collapse, Suffer Another Frustrating Loss to Seahawks"

The San Francisco 49ers suffered another crushing defeat on Sunday, squandering a late fourth-quarter lead to the Seattle Seahawks in dramatic fashion. With just 12 seconds left on the clock, the Seahawks scored the game-winning touchdown, turning what looked like a 49ers victory into a 20-17 loss.

For San Francisco, the heartbreak felt all too familiar. Similar late-game collapses against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3 and the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5 have defined their frustrating season.

"It's infuriating, honestly," said linebacker Fred Warner. "It's not like us. But that's just what we've shown this year. Until we stop doing that, that's who we are."

The loss leaves the 49ers at 5-5 and struggling to stay relevant in the NFC West, where they now hold a 1-3 divisional record. To make matters worse, defensive end Nick Bosa exited Sunday's game with a hip and oblique injury, potentially sidelining one of their key defensive players for upcoming weeks.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the 49ers' three divisional losses this season after leading in the final two minutes of regulation tie them for the most such defeats in a season since the 1970 NFL merger. It's a troubling trend shared with teams like the 2001 Carolina Panthers and 1996 Baltimore Ravens, who suffered similar heartbreaks.

The 49ers also join the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals as teams with the most blown fourth-quarter leads this season. For head coach Kyle Shanahan, the inability to close out games has been a recurring theme.

"We had every opportunity to run away with that and put it away," Shanahan said. "[We] missed a couple opportunities to do that and ... let people hang around, that's what happens."

San Francisco's offensive struggles compounded their woes on Sunday. Missing star tight end George Kittle due to a hamstring injury, the team managed just 277 total yards — their lowest offensive output since Week 6 of the 2023 season. The longest play of the game was a mere 22 yards, tied for the second-shortest explosive play in any game under Shanahan's tenure since 2017.

With their season teetering on the brink, the 49ers must confront their repeated mistakes and missed opportunities if they hope to salvage their playoff aspirations.
