"ASU Takes Control of Big 12 Title Hopes with Win Over BYU and Colorado's Loss to Kansas"

ASU Football Eyes Big 12 Title Shot After Win Over BYU and Colorado's Loss

The Arizona State Sun Devils are now firmly in control of their path to the Big 12 Championship Game following a thrilling 28-23 victory over BYU and Colorado’s 37-21 defeat to Kansas.

With one game remaining, a win against in-state rival Arizona in next week’s Territorial Cup will secure ASU’s spot in Arlington, Texas, for the conference title game.

This remarkable turnaround comes in just the second season under head coach Kenny Dillingham, whose leadership has revitalized a program that endured back-to-back three-win campaigns. Key contributors to ASU’s success include standout performances from running back Cam Skattebo, redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt, and wide receiver Jordyn Tyson.

Skattebo has been a workhorse for the Sun Devils, entering the weekend as the only FBS player with more than 1,000 rushing yards and 300 receiving yards. His consistent production has cemented him as one of the best players in the program this season.

Building a Foundation for Success

The Sun Devils’ quick resurgence earned contract extensions for coordinators Marcus Arroyo and Brian Ward, both instrumental in ASU’s improvement. Arroyo, who previously coached NFL star Justin Herbert at Oregon, has forged a strong connection with Leavitt, a transfer from Michigan State.

Leavitt’s preparation has drawn praise from teammates and coaches alike. Wide receiver Jordyn Tyson described the young quarterback as "over-prepared" on the Sparky’s Den Podcast, crediting constant communication between the two for their late-season success.

Defensively, Ward has transformed the unit, improving ASU’s points allowed per game by nine from last year. His emphasis on creating turnovers has helped the Sun Devils excel in complementary football, consistently giving the offense opportunities to score.

Dillingham has prioritized securing extensions for his assistants and enhancing NIL opportunities for his players, a strategy that has built trust within the program. Despite the focus on others, his own contract is expected to be extended soon given the team's resurgence.

Chasing Milestones

ASU is now just one victory away from its first 10-win season since 2014 when Todd Graham led the team to back-to-back double-digit win campaigns. A win over Arizona would also ensure the Sun Devils remain at the top of the Big 12 standings, completing a season defined by growth and resilience.

Big 12 Standings After Week 13

  • Arizona State: 6-2 conference, 9-2 overall
  • No. 21 Arizona: 6-2 conference, 9-2 overall

The Sun Devils head into the Territorial Cup with everything on the line, ready to solidify their spot in the Big 12 Championship Game and cap off a season for the record books.
