Over 22 million people in the UK receive at least one benefit from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), including 12.7 million older adults who collect State Pension payments. The State Pension is a contributory benefit available to individuals of retirement age who have a minimum of 10 years of National Insurance contributions.
However, many people, especially those new to retirement, may not be aware of the annual ‘Christmas Bonus’—a one-off, tax-free payment of £10 provided to eligible benefit recipients in early December. This bonus, available to those receiving the State Pension or certain other benefits like Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Adult Disability Payment (ADP), Attendance Allowance, and Carer’s Allowance, can provide a welcome boost during the winter season. To qualify, recipients must meet eligibility requirements during a specific period, usually the first full week of December.
