**Title:** Think DOJ Staffers Were Already in Panic Mode? Just Wait...

Trump’s Pick of Matt Gaetz for Attorney General Alarms Justice Department Veterans

Donald Trump’s nomination of Rep. Matt Gaetz as Attorney General has left Justice Department veterans alarmed, warning that his appointment could lead to a Justice Department embroiled in chaos and retribution. Gaetz, a polarizing Republican known for his fervent loyalty to Trump, has generated resistance on Capitol Hill, making his confirmation uncertain. However, the nomination itself sends a strong message about Trump’s expectations for the DOJ in his second term: a preference for an unwavering loyalist willing to pursue Trump’s agenda without restraint.

With no prosecutorial experience and a controversial history, Gaetz is viewed as a provocative figure whose primary interactions with the DOJ have been as the subject of investigations. Recently, he even appeared at Trump’s Manhattan trial, making veiled references to far-right groups online. His appointment would align with Trump’s campaign promise to use the Justice Department to target opponents.

“There’s no conceivable justification for nominating someone this divisive for such a critical role other than to have a puppet,” said Ty Cobb, former Trump White House lawyer. Gaetz’s nomination has left DOJ staff in shock, with one career lawyer noting, “This is completely wild… he’s here for one purpose: retribution.”

Following the announcement, Gaetz resigned his House seat, marking the end of a turbulent four terms marked by scandals and confrontations. Known for backing Trump’s efforts to challenge the 2020 election, his nomination underscores Trump’s intent to reshape the DOJ to align closely with his vision. Gaetz’s record, including his involvement in derailing former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s leadership and investigations into alleged sex trafficking (charges he denied and never faced), has added to the already considerable apprehension about his nomination.
