"Trump Selects Fox News Host Pete Hegseth as Defense Secretary Nominee"

President-elect Donald Trump has announced Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host, author, and military veteran, as his choice for defense secretary.

Hegseth, 44, who served tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, would take on leadership of the U.S. military, the world’s largest, marking his entry into politics. In his announcement on Tuesday, Trump praised Hegseth as “tough, smart, and a true believer in America First.”

The announcement coincided with Trump’s decision to bring on another political newcomer, billionaire Elon Musk, to help cut government costs.

Following last week's election, Trump’s administration is quickly coming together. Hegseth joins other security appointments, including Trump’s choice of John Ratcliffe to lead the CIA.

If confirmed by the Senate, Hegseth will face critical decisions, including U.S. military support for Israel during its Gaza operations and aiding Ukraine against Russia. Trump has signaled he wants to reduce U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts and criticized the Biden administration’s spending on Ukraine during his campaign.

Other key members joining Trump’s team include South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as homeland security secretary and veteran Michael Waltz as national security adviser. Senator Marco Rubio, known for his firm stance on China, is anticipated to become secretary of state, though this pick remains unofficial.

Republicans have reclaimed control of the Senate and may soon secure a House majority, strengthening Trump’s position. Some appointments, including Hegseth’s, require Senate confirmation, though Trump has urged the next Senate leader to waive this requirement where possible.

The Senate will vote on a new leader on Wednesday, the same day Trump is expected to meet outgoing President Joe Biden at the White House for the traditional transition of power.
