Guardiola Admits Manchester City’s Title Hopes Are Fading After Draw with Crystal Palace
Pep Guardiola has acknowledged Manchester City face a daunting challenge to reclaim the Premier League title, describing the campaign as “a season to survive” after a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.
City managed to avoid a sixth consecutive away defeat across all competitions thanks to goals from Erling Haaland and Rico Lewis, which canceled out strikes from Crystal Palace’s Daniel Muñoz and Maxence Lacroix. However, the visitors were reduced to 10 men late in the match after Lewis, filling in at left-back due to injuries to Nathan Aké and Manuel Akanji, received a second yellow card in the 84th minute. His suspension rules him out of next Sunday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad.
Adding to their challenges, City are dealing with a depleted squad as they prepare for a crucial Champions League clash against Juventus in Turin on Wednesday. Currently, they sit eight points behind league leaders Liverpool, having played one game more.
“It’s a season to survive. We cannot talk about the title race when we lose four games in a row and draw,” Guardiola admitted. “Unfortunately, we are missing an important player for us this season for the next game against United. But in general, what the players have done under the circumstances is really good."
Guardiola acknowledged the impact of injuries, saying, “We knew from the beginning we’ve been unlucky in many ways. We have to keep going with the players we have available.”
Despite concerns about overburdening players, Guardiola introduced Jack Grealish and Jérémy Doku as late substitutes. While he expressed disappointment with his team’s defending for Palace’s second goal, he was encouraged by Haaland’s performance, as the striker's goal moved him level with Mohamed Salah on 13 league goals.
City’s uphill battle continues as they navigate injuries, tough fixtures, and mounting pressure in their pursuit of success both domestically and in Europe.
