Pete Carroll Agrees to Three-Year Deal as Raiders Head Coach

HENDERSON, Nev. – The Las Vegas Raiders have reached an agreement with Pete Carroll to become the team’s head coach on a three-year contract, with a fourth-year team option, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Carroll, who will turn 74 on Sept. 15, is one of only four head coaches to win both a college football national championship and a Super Bowl, joining Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson, and Jim Harbaugh. He will also be the Raiders' fifth head coach, including interims, since the team relocated to Las Vegas from Oakland in 2020, following Jon Gruden, Rich Bisaccia, Josh McDaniels, and Antonio Pierce. Additionally, Carroll becomes the ninth coach under owner Mark Davis since he took over the franchise after his father, Al Davis, passed away in 2011.

Carroll brings extensive experience and stability to a team that has lacked both, especially after Gruden's resignation in 2021 amid an email controversy. His leadership is expected to complement first-time general manager John Spytek, who was finalizing his deal with the Raiders earlier in the week. Carroll will also compete in a stacked AFC West, featuring coaching heavyweights such as Kansas City’s Andy Reid, Denver’s Sean Payton, and the Los Angeles Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh.

During his 14-year tenure with the Seattle Seahawks, Carroll led the team to a Super Bowl XLVIII victory, two NFC championships, and 10 playoff appearances. He became the winningest coach in Seahawks history, finishing with a regular-season record of 137-89-1 and a 10-9 postseason record. Carroll also previously coached the New York Jets (6-10 in 1994) and the New England Patriots (27-21 from 1997-99), giving him a career coaching record of 181-131-1.

After a year away from coaching in 2000, Carroll revamped his approach and took over at USC in 2001, leading the Trojans to seven straight Pac-10 titles, two national championships, and a 97-19 record over nine seasons. His success at USC ultimately led to his hiring by the Seahawks in 2010, where he was given full control over personnel decisions.

As a defensive-minded coach, Carroll, alongside Spytek, will need to address key offseason challenges for the Raiders, particularly on defense. Several key players, including defensive ends Malcolm Koonce and K’Lavon Chaisson, linebackers Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo, cornerback Nate Hobbs, and safeties Tre’von Moehrig and Marcus Epps, are pending free agents.

Offensively, the Raiders hold the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and have over $108 million in salary cap space, positioning them to pursue a quarterback upgrade. However, they do return first-team All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers.

The Raiders recently parted ways with Antonio Pierce, who had been promoted from linebackers coach to interim head coach after the midseason firing of Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler in 2023. The team also dismissed general manager Tom Telesco after just one season.

Las Vegas finished the 2024 season with a 4-13 record, placing last in the AFC West, including a 10-game losing streak—the franchise’s longest in a decade. Carroll will now be tasked with turning things around for a team in need of a fresh start.
