Fans Heartbroken as 911: Lone Star Ends After Five Seasons – Showrunners Explain Cancellation

Viewers were left devastated as 911: Lone Star aired its final episode on Monday, February 3.

The hit Fox drama, a spin-off of 911, followed first responders in Austin, Texas. Starring Rob Lowe as Captain Owen Strand and Gina Torres as Captain Tommy Vega, the series ran from January 2020 to February 2025.

Despite its popularity, Fox announced in September that the show would conclude after its fifth season, leaving many fans "disappointed" by the decision.

Speaking to Variety, showrunner Ryan Murphy revealed that financial constraints ultimately led to the cancellation. “Sadly, we all love Lone Star, but the financials just didn’t work,” he explained.

“As a Disney-owned production airing on a Fox network, it was never an ideal situation. We had a great run, but it just wasn’t sustainable,” he added.

Rob Lowe, who also served as an executive producer, confirmed that the team anticipated the end. “We all went into it pretty much knowing this would be the final season, so that influenced everything we did,” he told Variety.

Reflecting on the show’s impact, Lowe expressed pride in its storytelling. “We wanted to showcase the value of a series like this, and I think we did a great job. The scope and scale of our episodes were incredible — like mini-movies every week.”
