A 13-year-old girl, missing since mid-May, was found by police on Monday in a town in Lower Austria near Vienna. The police had issued a public search notice after the girl was last seen leaving her school on Anton-Krieger-Gasse in Vienna-Liesing at around 5:10 PM on May 13, according to the state police department. She was in the company of her 17-year-old boyfriend.
Acting on tips from the boy's close circle, police searched his residence and found the pair on the street, said police spokesperson Markus Dittrich. They were quickly located and taken to a Lower Austrian police station. The boy was indeed the 17-year-old the girl had mentioned to her classmates, telling them he would pick her up and take care of her.
The boy lives with a parent in Lower Austria, who reportedly was unaware of the girl's presence. The matter is being closely investigated in coordination with the public prosecutor's office. The 17-year-old has not yet been questioned, and it remains to be determined whether any criminal charges will be brought against him.
The girl has been in a socio-educational living group under the care of the Municipal Department 11 (MA 11) for Children and Youth Welfare since autumn 2023. "She did not return to the group," said spokesperson Ingrid Pöschmann of the APA. The facility immediately reported her absence to the police. MA 11 expressed concern over the case as the girl had never been missing before. According to Dittrich, the girl will now be returned to the care of MA 11 after being interviewed.
