Paris Saint-Germain secured a 2-1 victory over Lyon in the French Cup final, clinching the domestic double in what marked superstar Kylian Mbappe's final match for the club.
Ousmane Dembele, the French winger, and Fabian Ruiz, the Spanish midfielder, found the net for PSG in the first half, giving their team a commanding lead. Lyon's Jake O'Brien managed to score a consolation goal in the second half.
This triumph marked PSG's first league and cup double since 2020 when they achieved a domestic treble by also winning the now defunct League Cup.
As the final whistle blew, Mbappe celebrated with a triumphant roar, embracing and congratulating his teammates. The PSG staff joined in the celebration, lifting Mbappe and tossing him into the air.
Reflecting on his departure, Mbappe expressed mixed emotions, saying, "You feel a bit more the weight of things because you realise that it's really over." He added, "But I'm very happy to have been able to finish with a trophy."
Despite their loss in the final, Lyon secured a spot in the Europa League by finishing sixth in the league, a remarkable feat considering their position at the bottom of the table in December.
Dembele opened the scoring for PSG in the 22nd minute with a header, while Ruiz extended their lead in the 34th minute by converting a rebound.
Mbappe, in his last outing for PSG, made several attempts to score but was unsuccessful. Nevertheless, he leaves the club as PSG's all-time leading scorer in all competitions, with 256 goals in 308 appearances.
The French Cup final was overshadowed by violence as supporters from Lyon and PSG clashed on a highway leading to the venue. The match was relocated to Stade Pierre Mauroy in Villeneuve d'Ascq due to preparations for the Olympic Games, marking the first time a city outside the Greater Paris area hosted the French Cup final since its inception in 1917.
