Susan Backlinie, the former actress and stuntwoman renowned for her portrayal of Chrissie Watkins, the first victim of the shark in Steven Spielberg's iconic film JAWS (1975), passed away early Saturday morning at her residence in Ventura, California. She was 77 years old. The confirmation of her passing came from Backlinie’s convention agent, Matthew Templeton.
During the filming of her scenes in Jaws, which lasted three days, Backlinie was strapped into a harness while the crew worked diligently to achieve the desired visual effects. Despite speculation, her startled reactions and screams were not the result of any harm caused by the harness pulling her back and forth in the water.
