Ian Wright Condemns Scotland Defender Ryan Porteous for 'Appalling' Challenge Leading to Red Card in Euro 2024 Opener

Ian Wright Criticizes Ryan Porteous for 'Appalling' Challenge on Ilkay Gundogan Leading to Red Card in Euro 2024 Opener

Ian Wright strongly condemned Ryan Porteous for his reckless tackle on Ilkay Gundogan, which resulted in the Scotland defender being sent off in the Euro 2024 opener against Germany.

Porteous received a red card towards the end of the first half for a two-footed lunge on the Germany captain. Wright, speaking on ITV, expressed his concern over the severity of the challenge, stating that Gundogan could have been 'seriously injured.'

This is a really bad, appalling challenge. The best thing is that Gundogan is not seriously injured. That could have been really bad. It's the last thing you need from Scotland's point of view, Wright said.

The incident occurred with Germany already leading by two goals. The hosts took the lead in the tenth minute through Florian Wirtz, followed by a second goal from Jamal Musiala nine minutes later. Matters worsened for Scotland as Kai Havertz coolly converted the resulting penalty after Porteous's dismissal.

Porteous, a Watford defender making his 12th appearance for Scotland, was playing in a major tournament for the first time. Scotland now faces a challenging path in their remaining group stage matches against Switzerland and Hungary.
