Max Verstappen Secures Third Consecutive Canadian Grand Prix Victory, Clinching 60th Formula 1 Win
Max Verstappen, driving for Red Bull, claimed his third consecutive victory at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, marking his 60th triumph in Formula 1 and his sixth win in nine races this season.
Starting from the second position in rainy conditions alongside pole-sitter George Russell, Verstappen displayed dominance late in the race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Ile Notre-Dame. The 26-year-old Dutch driver boasts an impressive record of 50 victories in the last 75 F1 races.
Verstappen crossed the finish line 3.879 seconds ahead of Lando Norris from McLaren in the 70-lap race on the 2.71-mile (4.36-kilometer) road course. Last year, Verstappen secured victory after starting from the pole position and leading every lap.
The race began with a wet track that gradually dried up as the sun emerged after 10 minutes, although rain showers intermittently returned throughout the afternoon.
It's a lot of fun to drive these kinds of races now and then," Verstappen commented. "You don’t want it all the time because that’s too stressful. But I had a lot of fun out there today
Norris relinquished a 10-second lead when Logan Sargeant triggered the safety car on Lap 26.
We should have won the race today and we didn’t so, frustrating, Norris expressed. "We had the pace. We should have won today. It’s as simple as that.
Mercedes secured the third and fourth positions, with George Russell finishing third and seven-time Montreal winner Lewis Hamilton in fourth place. McLaren's Oscar Piastri claimed the fifth spot, followed by Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, the sole Canadian competitor in the race.
Verstappen extended his season lead to 56 points over Charles Leclerc of Ferrari.
As a team, we made the right calls today," Verstappen stated, reflecting on his recent sixth-place finish in Monaco. "It’s great to have three wins in a row here. I hope I can add more in the future.
Despite a challenging weekend for Ferrari, organizers reported an impressive turnout of 350,000 spectators over the three-day event.
Verstappen's second-place start on Sunday, determined by a tiebreaker after posting the same lap time as Russell in qualifying on Saturday, marked another highlight of the weekend's events.
