Tom Jones' Major Health Struggles and Retirement Plans Following Significant Surgery

Welsh legend Tom Jones has celebrated his 84th birthday after an incredible six decades in the music industry, delivering iconic hits like "Sexbomb" and "It's Not Unusual."

The star, known for hits including "It's Not Unusual" and "Delilah," has been entertaining his loyal fans for 60 years. Currently performing on his sold-out Ages and Stages World Tour, The Voice coach says he’s feeling fitter than ever, according to the Mirror.

He has made it clear he has no plans to retire from performing anytime soon, stating he'll only hang up his mic if his voice starts to fail.

Last year, he said: “Thank God my voice is still working. I am 83 years old. I can’t believe it, but it is true. When I am singing I think, ‘How is this coming out of me?’ If the voice was not there, I would probably be thinking, ‘I don’t want to do so many shows,’ but I love it because my voice is still working!”

Tom has had both of his hips replaced in recent years, undergoing surgery on his left hip in 2017 and his right hip in 2022. The singer's right hip replacement came after he began to struggle to stand during his performances. He told the Daily Mail: “I could do about four songs without sitting,” before his surgery.

In 2017, he had his first hip operation after experiencing constant pain. A scan revealed that his cartilage had worn away in his left hip, causing the bones to crunch together.

Tom discussed his health at the ITV Entertainment Autumn Showcase last year, detailing his recovery from a double hip replacement ahead of his latest world tour.

Sir Tom also updated fans on social media, thanking them for their supportive messages and reporting that his recent surgery went very well. He wrote: "Papa has two new hips now! For all those concerned and who sent well wishes, I’m pleased to report my recent surgery went very well. I’m following orders and doing my physio, so happy to say I will be back soon!"

To maintain his health, Tom, born Thomas Jones Woodward, has cut down on alcohol and adopted a paleo diet, focusing on lean meats, fruits, fish, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.

Speaking on a Radio 2 show about his weight loss, Tom said: "I was putting too much weight on. I stopped working out for a bit and didn’t keep a check on it. With the Christmas puddings and cakes, I was 230 pounds (16.4 stone), which was 30 pounds more than I should be. I couldn't fit into my suits. That's when I thought: 'This has got to stop.'"

Three years ago, Tom revealed his unique approach to health maintenance—hanging upside down like a bat using a method called "inversion therapy," where individuals flip upside down on a special frame.

In 2021, he spoke about this preventative procedure, saying: "In 2030, I am going to be 90 years old. I hang upside down on one of those frames. It’s great. You put your feet in the thing, flip, and hang."

With his voice in excellent condition, his role as a coach on ITV’s The Voice, and his current global tour, it doesn’t look like the "Sexbomb" star is ready to slow down anytime soon.
