BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP)— Liam Payne, 31, former member of the globally popular British boy band One Direction, was found dead on Wednesday following a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, according to local authorities.
The Buenos Aires police reported that Payne fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel, located in the upscale Palermo district of Argentina's capital, suffering “extremely serious injuries.” Emergency responders confirmed his death at the scene, according to an official statement.
Pablo Policicchio, communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, informed The Associated Press that Payne “jumped from the balcony of his room.” Police were dispatched to the hotel shortly after 5 p.m. local time following a distress call about an “agitated man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.” In a 911 call obtained by the AP, the hotel manager described a guest who appeared “overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol” and was “destroying the room.” The manager’s concern grew as he mentioned that the room had a balcony.
