"Club Brugge 1-0 Aston Villa: Tyrone Mings’ Unusual Penalty Ends Villa’s Perfect Champions League Run"

Tyrone Mings’ unusual penalty concession ended Aston Villa’s perfect Champions League start, as Club Brugge secured a 1-0 win. Making his Champions League debut, Mings mistakenly handled a short pass from Emi Martinez inside his own area, gifting Brugge a penalty. Referee Tobias Stieler immediately pointed to the spot, and Hans Vanaken converted the penalty, scoring the game’s only goal and breaking Brugge’s 14-game winless streak against English teams.

Villa manager Unai Emery was critical, calling it “the biggest mistake I’ve witnessed in my career.” The penalty capped an underwhelming first half for Villa, who struggled against an energetic Brugge attack. Vanaken had come close earlier, with Martinez pushing his shot onto the post before blocking the rebound.

Although Villa controlled much of the possession, they rarely threatened Brugge’s goal. Their best chances came from a close-range header by John McGinn, which went over, and an off-target strike from Ollie Watkins. In contrast, Brugge created five chances on target in the first half, keeping Martinez busy and ultimately breaking Villa’s European momentum.
