"Ming's Mistake Was the Biggest I've Ever Seen, Says Emery"

Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings, making his comeback after 14 months out due to a knee injury, went from pre-match praise for his journey from non-league Chippenham Town to the Champions League, to post-match headlines for an unusual and costly error.

During Villa’s match against Club Brugge, Mings conceded what has been described as one of the strangest penalties in Champions League history. In the 50th minute, Mings picked up a pass from goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez inside the box, seemingly unaware the ball was already in play after a short goal-kick. This handball gave Brugge a penalty, sealing their 1-0 victory and handing Villa their first European defeat of the season.

Villa manager Unai Emery was blunt in his criticism, calling it "the biggest mistake I’ve witnessed in my career." The incident sparked widespread reactions, with BBC Sport’s Chris Sutton labeling it a "brain freeze," TNT pundit and former Leeds forward Lucy Ward calling it "a shambles" and "farcical," and ex-England striker Peter Crouch describing it as a "moment of madness."

The confusion began when referee Tobias Stieler halted Martinez’s goal-kick, pointing to the penalty spot. Replay and a VAR check confirmed Mings’ error, with Brugge’s Hans Vanaken stepping up to convert the penalty.

This incident brought back memories of a similar situation in the Champions League last season, when Arsenal’s Gabriel handled a pass from David Raya inside the box against Bayern Munich. However, Arsenal escaped punishment after the referee dismissed the incident as a "kid’s mistake," sparking frustration from Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel.
