"Penn State Hits Triple Digits Again in Dominant 103-54 Win Over UMBC"

Penn State men’s basketball (2-0) continued its undefeated start with a commanding 103-54 victory over UMBC (1-1) Friday night at the Bryce Jordan Center.

The Nittany Lions displayed a well-rounded offensive effort, enabling some key players to take a supporting role. Both teams had a slow start, with four missed shots each, until Yanic Konan Niederhauser opened the scoring for Penn State at 17:57. From there, Penn State surged to a 17-4 lead shortly after the first media timeout.

Head coach Mike Rhoades’ team extended its lead through aggressive defense, forcing turnovers and capitalizing in transition. UMBC struggled offensively, shooting under 30% in the first half, missing eight layups, and committing five turnovers. Konan Niederhauser shone defensively, taking advantage of his height against UMBC’s tallest player, who stands at 6-foot-9.

Despite struggling from beyond the arc, Penn State went into halftime with a 43-28 lead. Zach Hicks scored the team’s first three-pointer at the 6:36 mark, but the team went just 1-for-8 from deep in the first half. Ace Baldwin contributed defensively with five steals despite a scoreless first half.

Baldwin finally scored after drawing a foul early in the second half, hitting both free throws. Puff Johnson opened the second-half scoring with a three-pointer, while Konan Niederhauser continued his dominant play, looking formidable on both ends of the court. By the U12 timeout, he had a game-high 16 points and helped Penn State widen the gap to 66-36.

True freshmen Jahvin Carter and Dominick Stewart impressed with solid contributions in their second game. Stewart particularly stood out with a steal and dunk, finishing with seven points, three steals, and three assists. Carter added 12 points, going three-for-three from beyond the arc. Konan Niederhauser and Nick Kern Jr. energized the crowd with two powerful dunks, pushing Penn State’s lead to 75-43. The Nittany Lions improved their three-point shooting in the second half, going 9-for-15 from beyond the arc.

In the end, Penn State clinched a 103-54 win, with Konan Niederhauser leading the team with 18 points and nine rebounds. Baldwin finished with a +41 in 28 minutes, while Zach Hicks, D’Marco Dunn, Jahvin Carter, and Nick Kern all reached double figures.

Player of the Game

Yanic Konan Niederhauser - 18 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, 8-12 FG, +13

That’s two outstanding performances in a row for the Swiss big man. Big Ten play will be a true test, but so far, Niederhauser looks like an impressive addition to Penn State’s lineup.
