Asian Hornets Survive UK Winter for the First Time, Analysis Shows
Asian hornets have survived the UK winter for the first time, according to recent analysis. While this development is not yet considered evidence of an established population, officials are urging the public to report any sightings of the insects during the summer.
Nature groups have warned that there could be a surge in invasive non-native species. Last year, there were record sightings of the Asian hornet in the UK.
Asian hornets pose a significant threat to honey bees and other insect pollinators, capable of eating up to 50 honeybees a day. However, their risk to human health is not greater than that of native hornets.
The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) emphasized that early trapping is undamental to eradication efforts. The Wildlife and Countryside Link, a network representing 83 nature organizations, noted that recent flooding and warming temperatures have increased the risk of invasive species growing and spreading in the UK.
