From winning just five seats in the last election in partnership with the BSP, Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party has dealt a major blow to the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, which had secured 62 seats on its own in 2019. According to the Election Commission's data for the 80 parliamentary constituencies, the Samajwadi Party and Congress of the INDIA bloc are leading in 34 and 7 seats respectively, while the BJP-led NDA is ahead in 35 seats.
In the key political state, prominent leaders holding strong leads include Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Lucknow, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav in Kannauj and Mainpuri, and Congress candidates Rahul Gandhi and Kishori Lal Sharma in Rae Bareli and Amethi.
The resurgence of the Samajwadi Party marks a significant turnaround. Akhilesh Yadav led the opposition’s campaign, collaborating effectively with Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and Arvind Kejriwal’s party. This election marks the first general election after the death of SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, and Akhilesh has managed to surpass expectations, leading in more seats than the party secured in the 2004 election.
Despite being disparaged as the "Do ladko ki jodi" (pair of two boys) along with Rahul Gandhi by Narendra Modi, Yadav managed to galvanize support for his party. Notably, he also pushed back against BJP's jibes of nepotism, asserting that those without families had no right to criticize others, which led BJP members to adopt the phrase “Modi ka Parivaar” in their social media bios.
The SP had allocated 18 seats to Congress and one to the TMC, fielding its own candidates in the remaining constituencies out of the total 80.
This election has also seen other prominent figures trailing, such as Smriti Irani in Amethi, where Kishori Lal Sharma has extended his lead by over 1.5 lakh votes.
The 2024 election results reflect a significant shift in Uttar Pradesh, with the SP-led INDIA bloc making substantial gains and challenging the dominance of the BJP in the region.
