Coaching operates on the principle that individuals possess the answers to their own problems within themselves. A coach’s role is not to be a subject expert but to assist the individual in unlocking their potential. The emphasis is on the individual's thoughts and internal processes.
When we think of coaching, sports often come to mind. It's fitting, then, that one of the seminal books on coaching was authored by Timothy Gallwey, a successful tennis coach from California. His first book, *The Inner Game of Tennis*, was published in 1974.
In his pioneering work, Gallwey identified that tennis consists of two distinct games. The first is the outer game, which involves the mechanical aspects, such as holding the racket. This is where most coaches and players direct their attention. While Gallwey recognized the importance of the outer game, he was particularly intrigued by, and felt there was a lack of focus on, the inner game.
“This is the game that takes place in the mind of the player,” he wrote.
